Professionals are far from traveling year-round on perfectly asphalted roads. Accessing a construction site or working in harsh conditions such as the mountain requires a commercial vehicle with a foolproof motor skills. Today, manufacturers offer two technologies: enhanced traction or all-wheel drive. What are the offers?
 With regard to the models present in manufacturers' catalogs, solutions equipped with an all-wheel drive do not seem to be an axis of development. Yet some professionals are obliged to own a specific vehicle to satisfy their activities. Loggers, for example, face steep slopes and particularly slippery floors. For these, turning to German brands appears indispensable. Today, Volkswagen with its badged 4Motion and Mercedes models and its 4Matic are among the references with wide ranges. Volkswagen markets all its models (Caddy, Transporter, Crafter and Amarok) with a permanent all-wheel drive.
 Nevertheless, alongside these, other manufacturers have developed a technical alternative: enhanced motor skills. Less effective but also less expensive, it offers however facilities that can satisfy many professionals. In addition, manufacturers or processors marketing this alternative almost always add raised ground clearance to maximize efficiency. Without turning into a real off-road, models equipped with this equipment can easily pass through roads with deep, unpaved ruts.
Technologiquement, ce « récent » système permet d’augmenter la motricité des seules roues avant et non des quatre. En pratique, le conducteur bénéficie ainsi d’une adhérence adaptée au revêtement sur lequel il circule. En général, cinq modes de réglages sont disponibles : Normal, Sable, Neige, Boue et ESP off (déconnecté). À noter que les véhicules utilitaires légers ainsi équipés récupèrent aussi des pneus spéciaux nommés « Mud + Snow » (M + S), soit boue et neige. Par rapport à des gommes classiques, ces derniers se distinguent par des sculptures, une composition spécifique de la bande de roulement ou encore une structure conçues essentiellement pour apporter sur la neige un comportement routier supérieur à celui d'un pneumatique normal.
