Toyota Corolla 122h test (2019): not a return, a revolution!
The Corolla # 12 is not a Corolla like the others: 100% hybrid range! Convincing and accomplished, with a few details, she announces the complete switchover of Toyota to the hybrid solution.
The Auris I had succeeded in 2006 nine generations of Corolla stacked since 1966. The Corolla XII now takes over from the Auris II. Seen from France, the sudden desire of Toyota to revive names of the past with little echo in our memories seems strange: Corolla, Camry, Supra. But the important thing is elsewhere. The Auris II entered the quarry in 2013 armed with five engines: two gasoline 99 and 132 hp, two diesel 90 and 124 hp, a hybrid of 136 hp. The Corolla returns without a purely thermal proposal: two hybrids of 122 and 180 hp, nothing else! This is to say the range of revolution which she brandished the standard: Toyota rocking fully in a hybrid solution popular with its audience, and that accounted for 95% of Auris sales in 2018!
Other changes, minor but significant of the way followed by Toyota: the Corolla (4.37 m) is both longer (+ 9 cm) and lower (1.44 m, -2 cm) than the Auris , so more dynamic traits. Its line is harmonious, pleasing to the eye, but leaves an impression of déjà-vu: it is in keeping with the times. Hypertrophy of the grille, and two-tone shades are not strictly speaking a style. Toyota has not found hers yet.
The Corolla 122 h is also more expensive than the Auris because the hybridization has a cost with its additional batteries: first price to 26 950 €, 27 950 € in finish heart of range Dynamic. For the record, the Auris started at € 24,250 in 1.2 turbo gasoline 116 ch Design, two bars higher on the scale of finishes, and asked for 26 250 € hybrid version 136h Trend, label equivalent today to Dynamique. But thanks to the increase in hybrid recovery value seen since the "dieselgate", the Corolla 122h has achieved this feat: same monthly rent as an Auris 136h!
